One Response to “Injuries and Prevention Strategies in Youth Baseball Athletes”

    Sean,
Your capstone topic was very interesting to read about! Even though I don’t have much experience rehabilitating athletes who’ve had shoulder injuries. I appreciated your capstone products and related materials.
Regarding your pamphlet, I thought your color scheme worked nicely. The images you included were a nice touch as well. Some pamphlets include excessive information and not enough pictures. I thought you clearly promoted awareness to the danger of excessive pitching activity with the pediatric population. I liked the format of your pamphlet, the inclusion of risk factors, and USA Baseball pitching recommendations for kids 8 to 18 years old.
Some new information I learned from reading your scholarly paper was in regards to the recent advancements with technology and baseball. It’s fascinating the force going through the ulnar collateral ligament during throwing can now be measured! The inclusion of preloaded throwing training programs with Motus Global’s device reminded me of virtual reality training technology. With so many recent technological advancements from the Fitbit to virtual training technology, I feel the future of PT will continue growing and changing.
From what I observed growing up to present day, I feel there are some parents who push their children to be too competitive. That’s awesome there are now supplemental materials available which support athletes, such as baseball players, to take days off from practice. When I ran competitively in high-school and college I experienced various overuse injuries. I feel if I had taken days off to cross train more often I could of prevented most of my injuries from occurring.
Overall great job on your project! What’s neat about present day is that although research isn’t always available to areas of PT we are interested in finding more about, there are other materials available which we can put forth to good use such as the baseball throwing guidelines you referenced. I agree with you that as future physical therapists we can help educate our patients and their families the importance of injury prevention.
